Dear Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Jennifer Cohen and I will be your child’s  School Counselor .  I am a graduate of Canisius College with a Masters in School Counseling and bring with me experience from schools in Western New York.
The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. Children learn best when they feel good about themselves and their relationships with others.  They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values.  As your child’s school counselor, I will be able to provide:  support services to students, staff and parents, classroom guidance lessons, individual/group counseling, prevention activities, career exploration and make appropriate referrals when needed. A school counselor collaborates, consults, and coordinates with administration, teachers, staff and parents to ensure your child is getting the most support possible.  I am very excited to begin working as an advocate for you and your child.
My philosophy as a counselor coincides with the mission of DeSales Catholic School. I believe that all students have the ability to grow and reach their own potential.  My goal is to provide a safe and trusting environment where your child will feel a sense of belonging and to create a positive experience that will meet his/her academic, career and personal/social needs. By forming a trusting relationship, I hope to work through any challenges that could interfere with the learning process.  At DeSales Catholic School, I hope to help reinforce your child’s education, increase his/her self-esteem, foster responsibility, and develop life skills necessary to succeed beyond school.
Education is a partnership between home and school. We value parent involvement at every level and encourage you to partner with us.  Please feel free to call or email me if you have concerns or questions about your child’s education.  I am always available to schedule a conference to discuss any issue or concern you have regarding your child. I look forward to working with your child throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Cohen
