"Cyber Bully"

Middle schools students will be watching the ABC Family movie, "Cyber Bully" in the next few weeks. Here are some suggestions of discussion points that you can use after your child has watched the movie.

Families can talk about:

  • Online Safety. What are your family's rules about using the Internet? Are there sites you're not allowed to visit? Why? How do these rules compare to your friends? What are the dangers of sharing your personal information online?
*You are not allowed to be on facebook if you are under 13 years old. You should never put your home address, phone number or birth date on facebook. Also, the rule of thumb, if you don't know someone, you shouldn't be their facebook "friend."
  • Quality of Technology.  Has it improved the quality of our lives? How has it changed how we communicate? Is there a downside that we are always accessible with the use of technology?  What effect does it have on the traditional family setting?

  • Why is bullying such a hot topic? Do you ever witness this behavior? Do you think it is exaggerated or under reported, or does the media give it an accurate portrayal? Have you ever been bullied or cyber-bullied? If you have, what are some ways that you have coped?
